#66 – See Munising Falls

munising falls spectatorMunising Falls is one of the most popular waterfalls in the Munising and Picture Rocks area. And it’s no surprise why, it’s magnificent and easy to access for the whole family. Bring Mom, bring Dad, bring little Johnny, bring Fido, and bring lunch!

Beautiful Falls. Short Walk.

Munising Falls is a short 800 foot trail to the viewing platform with a couple of viewing options. You can view the falls from the ADA accessible platform, and then of course you could ignore the “stay on the trail” signs and walk behind the waterfall. But of course, I wouldn’t know anyone who does that!

The falls themselves are a 50 foot drop off a sandstone cliff, which is quiet impressive in all seasons. In the winter, it looks even more magnificent as it creates a giant column of ice. I’ve visited this site many times, and every time I’m amazed at how enormous this formation is! First time visitors are left in awe about the natural beauty of not only the waterfall but the surrounding area.

My Experience at Munising Falls

Munising Falls is one of the more “touristy” spots that I still love, even though there are usually other people there. I usually stop in whenever I’m in the area because why not? It’s only an 800 foot walk! The way that this waterfall forms in the winter is always different, but always amazing. I regularly bring a friend along to show off the area to during the winter months and they always go “Wow! That thing is huge!”

Bottom Line: Give this waterfall a shot. It’s easy to find, quick, and amazing to the whole family.

Other Things to Note: Snowshoes are not needed on this hike in the winter as it is usually pretty packed down, however ice cleats would be helpful for those who want to go behind the waterfall. But again, who does that?

How to get there? From Munising, head east on H-58 towards Grand Marais. Turn left onto Sand Point Rd, you will see a sign for the falls. The parking lot is about a mile in on that road, on the right across from the medical center. It is well marked; you shouldn’t have a hard time finding it.
